Mark Thornton, Executive in Residence leading VION Biosciences

Mark Thornton is a seasoned life sciences executive leading VION Biosciences, Iron Path Capital’s platform focused on high-purity biochemicals, assays, reagents, and custom chemistry solutions. Under his leadership, VION is executing a buy-and-build strategy in research, diagnostics, and biopharma markets. Prior to VION, Mark was a Vice President at Avantor, managing a $1 billion P&L and leading life sciences M&A due diligence. Earlier, at VWR/Avantor, he expanded contract manufacturing through six global acquisitions and held leadership roles at AMRESCO. Mark holds a BS in Biochemistry and an MBA from Cleveland State University.

LaMarr Barnes, water treatment executive and Iron Path Capital platform leader

LaMarr Barnes is an accomplished water treatment executive with extensive experience leading growth, integration, and transformation initiatives. He currently heads Iron Path’s water treatment platform. Previously, he served as CEO of Kurita America and U.S. Water Services, where he drove major integrations and expansions, including U.S. Water’s sale to Kurita. Earlier, LaMarr spent nearly two decades at Nalco in sales, operations, and strategy roles. He holds a BS in Physics from the University of Illinois, an MS in Nuclear Engineering from the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, and an MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business.

Jim Smith is a seasoned industry leader with decades of global experience in business management, manufacturing, and supply chain operations. He brings deep expertise in silane and silicone chemistry, as well as specialty chemical processing and operations. Jim currently serves as an executive advisor across multiple Iron Path platforms and as a board member of PureTech Scientific. He played a key role in the carve-out and stand-up of PureTech Scientific following its acquisition from Chemours in 2023. Previously, Jim was CEO of Composite Technology Development and COO of NuSil Technology, where he led global manufacturing, R&D, and supply chain operations. Earlier, he spent 25 years at Dow Corning in senior executive roles across specialty chemicals, manufacturing, and global logistics, including leadership in China overseeing strategic acquisitions and market expansion.
